PC Enthusiasm Thread

#1 Post by Buchou »

We're all PC gamers, let's show off our computers. Here's mine:
Image
Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3D
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce RTX 5070ti
RAM: 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 (nabbed this at the very last possible moment before prices shot up)

I built it this January, and it's a big step up from my old PC. I had been running an ASUS prebuilt that was already entry level in 2017. I used to barely reach 60fps in TF2, and now I get well over 180 on max settings. There's actually been a noticeable difference in my performance which I didn't expect. Sniper is easily the class I'm worst at, he's my least played class, and before I couldn't for the life of me get headshots. Now I can!

What are your guys' specs? Curious what my fellow Castaways are playing on.

CPU: Ryzen 9 5950x
GPU: Sapphire NITRO+ Radeon RX 6900XT (16GB VRAM)
RAM: 64GB DDR4-3600 CL16
Mobo: Aorus B550 Elite AM4
Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 2TB NVME
Case: Fractal Torrent ATX Mid tower
Power supply: Corsair 850 Platinum

For my CPU cooler I have an ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 420mm, which I discovered actually did not fit in the case properly so I had to saw some of the bottom of the case in so it would fit.

I got the CPU specifically for high core count because it makes compiling software faster

Been running this for about 3.5 years and it's served me well. Hoping it will serve me well for another decade to come. I got this in 2022 when prices were better, don't even wanna know what this would cost now a days.
Oh, they never lie. They dissemble, evade, prevaricate, confound, confuse, distract, obscure, subtly misrepresent and willfully misunderstand with what often appears to be a positively gleeful relish and are generally perfectly capable of contriving to give one an utterly unambiguous impression of their future course of action while in fact intending to do exactly the opposite, but they never lie. Perish the thought.

I'm currently using a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF that I upgraded.

Intel i7-4790 @ 3.6GHz (4.0GHz boost)
AMD Radeon Embedded E9260 4GB GDDR5
16GB Dual Channel DDR3-1600 CL11
500GB Patriot P220 Sata SSD

I like fucking around with old hardware, so I switch PC's often. I enjoy the current setup. Doesn't take up much room on my desk and is still a beast despite being over a decade old.

keyed, I still run a Haswell i7

Intel Core i7-4770
32GB DDR3-1600
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 SUPER

runs tf2 fine at high-ish settings 1440p

Can't be bothered to upgrade as I am a hardware hoarder (can't be bothered to get rid of old hardware) and don't want to shell the cash for a new spangled PC

Just acquired two new (to me) PC's for$FREE.99curtosy of the side of the road. The first PC is a faintly cigarette scented PowerSpec mystery model with some pretty decent hardware.

Specs:

  • i5-4590 4C/4T @ 3.3GHz (3.7GHz boost)

  • 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3-1600 CL11

  • Unbranded OEM H81 LGA1150 Motherboard

  • 2TB 7200 RPM? Toshiba HDD

  • 300W Allied Exploder PSU

  • 1SICK80mm Molex LED Fan (i hope it's blue)

I thought about taking a few pictures, but that was after I disassembled everything. After dismantling it, I brought the case down to the car wash to hose off all the cigarette grime. That did not work. So I took it back home, drew a hot bath, and attacked it with a magic eraser for an hour and a half. The chassis cleaned up nicely, at least the metal parts did. I'm going to have to scrub the plastic front and top panel again. After I was done my bathtub looked like a big cup of coffee and I luckily managed to only slice 2 of my fingers on all the sharp bits of aluminum :)

I might scrub the motherboard with some isopropyl and a toothbrush later, but it's probably not necessary. The components on the inside of the case were shielded from the majority of the grime thanks to PowerSpec blocking any and all airflow with thick sheets of foam covering the mesh front panel. They proved that sometimes bad ideas are actually great ideas!

I haven't tested any of the core components yet, but I'm holding out hope that everything will work just fine. For a couple weeks now I've been searching for a cheap secondhand system with a plenty of expansion bays to use as a NAS. What amazing luck that I managed to stumble upon this bad boy. It even came with a 2TB drive that has a manufacture date of 2015, wasn't secured with any screws, and I'm sure will definitely pass SMART with 0 bad sectors. Maybe I'll even find the rest of the Epstein files on there.

The second PC is far less impressive and I'm not sure why I even bothered picking it up. It's some old Gateway with a Pentium 4. It was lying on top of the first PC with no side panel and was full of snow. It shielded the other PC from the elements, but I don't think there's going to be anything useful I can salvage from it. Considering the era it's from, it's more than likely the caps are bad anyway. It's probably going back in the garbage.

i like playing with trash

my GAMING setup whichexudesgaming power:

  • Ryzen 7 7700X

  • RX 7800 XT [16gb]

  • 32GB 2x16 DDR5-6000

I built this computer sometime in January of last year because I wanted to play Helldivers 2 at an acceptable framerate.
My old computer was something like this:
GPU: RTX 1660
CPU: i7 7700k
RAM: 16 gbs of ddr4
definitely needed an upgrade and I'm very glad I did at the time I did!
now I can play helldivers 2 at 70 fps instead of 30 on lowest (optimized game)

I have upgraded from my Optiplex... sorta.

Last year I assembled a brand new computer for a little over $500, which I intended to daily drive for years to come. About a month later I happened upon an old Dell Optiplex in a scrap pile and started using that instead. What can I say? It was much smaller, way quieter, and did everything I needed it to. To put it simply, it "just werked". It worked so well that had I planned to sell my new computer and downgrade to the decade old shitbox. At least, that was the plan until the RAMpocalypse happened. I then realized that I may not get another opportunity to buy a brand new computer anytime soon and opted to downsize instead.

  • Thermaltake Versa H18 Micro ATX Case

  • Thermaltake Smart 600W 80+ White Label Power Supply

  • AMD Wraith Stealth CPU Cooler

  • Thermalright TL-C12C 120mm 1550RPM Fans (2 intake, 1 exhaust)

What Changed:

  • Ryzen 5 5600X (now w/ 45-75mV undervolt)

  • SOYO Radeon RX 5700 XT 8GB Gigabyte Low Profile Radeon RX 6400 4GB

  • Thermaltake Versa H18 Micro ATX Case T.F.SKYWINDINTL A10 7.3L Mini Tower

  • 3 Thermalright TL-C12C 120mm 1550 RPM Fans ARCTIC P9 Max 92mm 4300 RPM Fan (intake)

Next week I'll either post about my plans for an entire computer lab that I purchased from a local community college for a buck fiddy or about what I'm doing with the old case from this build.

i got a fairly cheap laptop with an RTX 3050 in it but it was made by some off brand chinese company so it broke after about a year and a half. in mid 2024 i bought a $1000 prebuilt from the local PC shop that's been around longer than i have.

CPU: Intel i7-8700k @ 3.70GHz
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce GTX 1080
Memory: 64gb DDR4 ram
Storage: 1TB (i also have a 256gb thumb drive + 64gb thumb drive plugged in)

extremely mid-tier specs, i know that, but for only 1k and getting a boatload of ram right before the prices started artificially inflating, i'm happy with it.
the next pc won't be a prebuilt, and will last a good long while. (+ i'll hopefully be able to afford it within the next 2 years or so if sam altman gets what's coming to him)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5600G (3.9 GHz base speed, 12 threads)
GPU: ^ embedded, but decent
RAM: 16GBs DDR4 overclocked to 4200
Storage: Primary: 120GB SSD disk server with a 240GB HDD external disk for an automatic WORM backup (planning to upgrade and have a spare 500GB HDD and a spare 120GB SSD)
Secondary: 240GB NVME SSD Windows disk

The computer has a very inconvenient form factor, but thankfully computers never get slower - you only get a new computer when you have a new task

I mostly play old videogames, so I run on max graphics just fine 8-)
Although for Slime Rancher, I sadly had to decrease them
