Veterans of Castaway, thoughts Old switch speed?

#1 Post by Suspicious Carl »

The subject of "pacing" is a debate i've been having with people lately when it comes to TF2, iv'e 3 been going back and fourth on weather TF2's "well crafted singleplayer" philosophy has been broken through things like all sorts of weapons that change speed, health, or give classes the ability to do things they were probably never intended to do, a side effect of the mass edition of unlocks, auto reload, reload cancelling, and the general game just becoming far more chaotic and clusterfucky if that makes sense. Now whether or not this is actually true, i very much love the game as it is (on castaway of course) with its vast amount of fun unlocks and features, i could never imagine playing exclusively any kind of server or spinoff mod that removes weapons, BUT in all of these discussions i've had with people one change came up over and over and over again, that being Tough Break's 25% faster universal switch speed change. I've been told many times this change resulted in the game becoming "too fast paced" and that it "made swapping weapons mid battle mindless", aswell as some other things and honestly i am quite interested in it. The truth is though i have never experienced pre TB switch speeds in the vanilla game, only in mods like Gayrush™ so i have no idea how it affects the real game, from the TF2 videos i have watched it does appear to make the overall game give you a little more time to breath but perhaps my mind is just making things up, the most noticeable change is it makes the weapon animations look waaaayy better as they were specifically designed for that switch speed, i always thought the modern animations looked janky and "off", i was going to suggest this as a change in the weapon revert thread but many would probably see it as a Nerf, it would also probably be reacted to violently as im sure it would take some getting used to. But honestly the entire point of the server is to Emulate an old era of the game before everything went to hell (technically the point of the server is just to make the game fun again but making the game fun again is pretty much just making it older), and while we take the best parts of every era and push them together rather then doing a blanket sweep revert, to be fair tough break was an abysmal update and like 9 months before the game completely broke and went down the toilet. So i am putting this out to get opinions and feedback on all those whole experienced the game this way first hand, 1. did pre toughbreak switch speed feel better? 2. did it affect the games pacing in a positive way or negative way, if at all? did it feel clunky and annoying, or sensible and smooth? 3. would this be a good edition to Castaway or is this whole thing retarded babble? please give thoughts :ugeek:

I don't even remember the old switch speed tbh, I took a break from roughly tough break to a few months before JI so I wasn't really familiar with everything they did around then.

My intuition says that we're better off with modern switch speed. TF2 is a faster game now and everyone is used to it, I don't see why we'd go back to old switch speed

Oh, they never lie. They dissemble, evade, prevaricate, confound, confuse, distract, obscure, subtly misrepresent and willfully misunderstand with what often appears to be a positively gleeful relish and are generally perfectly capable of contriving to give one an utterly unambiguous impression of their future course of action while in fact intending to do exactly the opposite, but they never lie. Perish the thought.

I was there for the change and honestly, I don't remember feeling a difference. If I had any opinion on it back then, it was probably that it was good. During that era I considered myself a Scout main and almost exclusively played nothing but Scout. I would have enjoyed anything that allowed me to frag even faster.

I do remember when they buffed Spy and Medic's movement speed and hated it.

i'm in the camp of "wasn't really paying that much attention". i don't think it really adds to the game becoming "too fast paced" at all, if anything it's just a good QoL change. plus, even if you do think it makes the game too sweaty, we have checks and balances on tryhards in the form of reverts like the sandman stun and the old natascha.

I don't remember too well but the only thing it really impacted was the degreaser, the universal buff made it a lot less enticing to use even for combos & later on it got nerfed to the state it's in today. does castaway need the switch speed revert? it might be fun to try, I imagine players would get used to it the way we got used to the switch-speed buff from tough break

also you can use the 2013 weapons mod to bring back the old switch speed times for deploy animations

highpoobaslittenuinely i’d prefer the old switch speeds, people don’t realize how drastically it changed the game’s overall pacing, but it’s also the same problem as damage spread, heres my reasoning:

Damage spread affected how you visualize your potential damage, rather than having flat rates for damage and always knowing how much you will do with weapons that don’t have damage fall off (grenade launchers, snipers, melee)
It was overall a positive addition because it mixed up interactions in a way that wasn’t unfair for either party, because it wasn’t really noticeable for the large majority of weapons, even on melees most of the time you get a kill is with a random crit anyways, it was mostly snipers and stock demos

With the old switch speed it slows down the game’s pace, which is good, TF2 isn’t a crackpot twitch aim quake shooter, if you’re looking for that, go play comp nigger. TF2 is a slower paced game, it always has been, comp and therefore casual were introduced because people wanted to speed the game’s pacing up to be more like Quake or Call of Duty, and that’s why both comp and casual suck dick.

Anyways long story short much like damage spread most of our players started after these changes were made, and therefore didn’t play during a time period where they were active, and even if they did it’s highly doubtful they remember what playing with damage spread or slower weapon speed feels like. I’d prefer them both to be added, but it’s too radical for the newbs, so I can get why they wouldn’t want it

God in his mercy such created me
That misery of yours attains me not,
Nor any flame assails me of this burning.

I only played with the slower switch speed on Castaway (we had it for a month in 2024), and I don't remember it being much better or worse. I think we should just stick with the modern switch speed.

As for the old deploy animations looking better, I agree and use the mod Genuline mentioned which reverts it:
2013 Weapons Viewmodels & Animations

Old weapon switch speed is SOVL and a part of Robin Walker's vision! It only got changed in Tough Break as a dog treat to please the compies.

New buzzword?

For real though, reverting the weapon switch speed would be a horrible idea. It objectively makes the weapons feel shittier and slower to use. If I'm in the middle of a fight, and it suddenly takes me half a second longer to pull out a shotgun to finish off an opponent and I die because of it, that's bullshit. I experienced the slower weapon draw animations when I played Troon Fortress 2 "Classic" to escape the bots, and it was probably more infuriating for me than the 'community' surrounding that mod and other mods like it. With it, the gameplay just felt off, and it made me play worse as a result. Maybe I've just gotten too used to how they work post-Tough Break, but I personally prefer being able to quickly swap to melee in the middle of a rocket jump or to a pistol while fighting another Scout.

I would argue Team Fortress 2 has been a fast-paced chaotic game from the start, so even from a TF2 purist standpoint it wouldn't make sense to revert this. The animations are fine the way they are, and unless you're also removing every weapon that was added after 2007, I don't see a point in changing how fast you can equip them to match how it was before the game became "too fast-paced." There are plenty of things you can blame compies for ruining, but this isn't one of them IMO.

There is only one thing that increased weapon switch speed fucks up:
You used to have to have fast as fuck fingers, be close enough, and stack weapon switch speed bonuses to be able to pryo-combo other pyros.
Pyro's passive ability is afterburn immunity, but if you can switch weapons and attack while the fire particles are still flying through the air and hitting him, he'll count as on fire.
