This all sounds great, but is there an ETA whenever the server will be online?

honestly, it could be any time people want. again the only thing i really want to do before starting is preventing strongholds from generating. if people want to start in a few days, i could just generate the world now with all structures disabled, generate all 128 stronghold locations without the stronghold, and then upload the world to the server.

If you are still interested in a vanilla beta 1.7.3 experience you should consider beta unleashed:

I do agree with the general sentiment of this thread where I wish we could easily pick and choose post-beta additions and I'm surprised such a platform doesn't exist.

beta unleashed is a client side quality of life modpack for beta 1.7.3. it's not really something that has a server or can be made into a server, it's only modifications that pertain to singleplayer.

we can pick and choose post-beta additions, that's exactly what i've been doing since starting work on the server

I'm down for it, although my 3d glasses will arrive on 12th of July. Also allow pirated clients to join

if people want to remove netherite i'm also alright with that, pretty easy to prevent that from generating. though i will say that i would still like to keep the modern nether biomes, gives a reason to really explore the dimension.

Nether is fun. Netherite is OK

Also, what about mending? Yay or nay? For me, nay

i would prefer not to have mending. i can implement a server side anvil patch to prevent the exponential cost increase that happens when you repeatedly repair your items. if we have netherite, though, mending would be practically required, because of how annoying ancient debris is to mine.

First I wanna say two things:

  1. I don't wanna imply by anything I say that other posters in this thread have bad taste or are dumb, but its clear that mirajaded has a lot more experience than them.

  2. For the most part, Mirajaded's vision is great, and he has the right plan on how to get their (modding modern versions). I would 100% try whatever he get's together.

A lot of people here are old players nostalgic for the past, but havent played in years, or new players who never had the past, nostalgic for something they never experienced. In either case, they often promote old versions of minecraft to play. As someone who started playing before the alpha nether update, and played up until the combat update, I want to say that the only reason to play those versions in 2026 is to relive a particular version that is significant to yourself as an individual, or to play old mods that you enjoyed. There's no reason a community of players should try to make those versions work. The best idea is to mod modern minecraft to make it look, act, and feel old. A lot of people here don't know that you can take modern minecraft and use mods to make it completely indistinguishable from old minecraft, except without the bugs. I lived through the buggy years of multiplayer, and I can say, its good to not relive them. In the old days you'd fall into the void, lose your pets, lose your inventory, lag out, etc all the time. It wasn't good.

As for my opinions I will say this - I played from alpha to 1.9. I remember vividly when they added extra kinds of stone and started adding OP end game things in the end. It's what made me leave the game. I think I would prefer to play a modern version of minecraft with the following:

  • Early release minecraft textures, animations, sounds, etc

  • Old fog (but not overdone)

  • We should have hunger and sprinting, I'm okay with tweaks to saturation for QoL

  • Any kind of terrain generation is good as long as it is old biomes (pre 1.9)

  • No villagers, pillagers, mansions, end structures, basically no trading/OP items

  • I'm okay with withers and stuff but maybe make it impossible to do the ez wither death cheese

  • Very early end dimension/end game (make the end a thing you do as a server together, not a destination dimension you build stupid farms and get OP items)

  • Pre-combat update fighting

  • Old nether, no piglins or whatever

  • I was and still am against the proliferation of 100 varieties of each building block of each color into the game. I thought we were more creative with limitations, and it was fun as a casual non-builder to build when the choices were fewer. There was a sweet spot in the early versions where we had a wide variety of textures/building types, but we weren't overwhelmed by a million variations of cracked stone brick. If mirajaded feels the same way, I think he probably could make a good judgement on what textures/blocks to keep from modern versions and what to leave behind. With a mod, you can pick what to keep in the game. I'm against the stone variations, but I wouldn't mind if they were added as a building block that you could craft but weren't in the world generation. The aesthetic of stone without granite andesite and the other shitty stone I cant remember is really good.

I'm sure theres more to it, but I havent played in forever and I dont remember what I like. The key is that all of these things are possible on new versions with mods, and you can make a modpack that you can download thru prism launcher. So everyone here can play super easily.

Last thing - We gotta keep in mind that the server would probably only be super active for a few weeks, then only for part of the year. It may attract a few people back to the game off and on, so maybe 10 or so consistent players per month, but that doesnt mean it wouldn't be fun. It just would eventually become a sort of shared singleplayer world for our community here. We have a great community that would 100% mesh well with the feel of old minecraft, so we should do it.

the hunger and saturation i honestly find ok in versions late enough in like 1.17. the hunger is really only unbearable from beta 1.8 to around release 1.10.
part of my decision to start developing the server on 1.17 was because i find it has a good block palette balance that isn't oversaturated. you may find it to be a bit much, but i really don't think it's that bad. the resource pack the server will prompt you to enable upon joining should cover most of what you would want regarding how they look.

unfortunately, with regards to combat, i can't really do sword blocking until 1.21.2. sucks, but i have removed the attack cooldown and restored the old axe/sword damage values. as for the end dimension, in any version of it you can't really prevent people from making crazy overpowered enderman XP farms. so, i have opted to just prevent strongholds from being generated entirely. i honestly don't mind the piglins or bastions because in the resource pack i compiled for the server they're just textured to be pigmen variants, and are named as such.

you are correct, you can essentially go through every little feature with modern mods and decide whether or not to keep them, and then just tell people to download a modpack for MultiMC or Prism. however, as stated at the start of this thread, i'm against that. i think it goes against what castaway is (partially, at least) designed to do with TF2, which is provide an old-fashioned experience that you can join on the vanilla game. there's a reason castaway wasn't made for TF2C, or TF2 Gold Rush or Pre Fortress 2, even if objectively one of those SDK mods is better for running a more perfect experience. it's just plain simpler to keep players interested and grow a community if they don't need to download anything special to join.

now i will make an exception to this, that being the 1.17 server will officially support the Simple Voice Chat mod. it will not be required to join by any means but if people want to use an in game voice chat this is the only way.

I'm assuming this is a survival world, would I be banned if I stole diamonds or blew up a few bases? also would this server have any rules at all or will it be a 'do as thou wilt' sorta of thing?

yeah i would probably opt to ban someone if theyre just blowing up everyones stuff, unless it's like an actual conflict that the involved players are cool with. there wouldn't be any official "factions" plugin or anything of the sort but if people wanna fight i won't stop them.
stealing items is harder to enforce because i don't want to put some CCP audit log plugin on the server to track everyone's items, i would say it's on you to hide them or use an ender chest if you want to keep them safe

If you put "Glacier" as the seed (with capital G), would the modified worldgen replicate this famous terrain?

Beautiful, genuinely. I assume the lower half of the world uses the modern cave generator, but that's fine. Replicating the surface terrain is what matters more.

Re: Minecraft Server

actually, no. this was another reason i chose to do this on 1.17. with the custom world generator mod, you get the old caves, but with the chunk cutoff bug fixed (really old bug that got fixed in beta 1.8) so the caves are actually how they're meant to be.

you can get these same caves in 1.18+ using similar methods, but 1.18 added the underground pockets of water everywhere called "aquifiers". some idiot at mojang forgot to program datapacks properly, so even if you use the built in datapack option to "disable aquifiers" it straight up does not work. aquifiers will clutter up the beta caves in those situations, and i wanted to avoid that.
