CASTAWAY-TAN Appreciation Thread

#1 Post by Kvasorob »

Castaway-tan is intended to be a secondary mascot of castaway.tf, female counterpart of John Castaway, as it was typical for the old internet niche groups to have an anime girl mascot of their own, I took it upon myself to design one.

first depiction of castaway-tan

She is supposed to be a scout dressed in a Pompous Privateer and Speedy Scoundrel cosmetics, in an effort to adhere to pirate theme and to maintain some consistency with John Castaway, who is also a soldier dressed in pirate-themed cosmetics.

However, obviously her design strayed away from Team Fortress 2's character design, in an endeavor to make way for cuteness, thus leaning more towards animeness, upon the immense breasts methodology.

latest depiction, originally incepted in summer of 2025 and almost scrapped

She is supposed to be a representation of castaway.tf and it's community, complimentary to John Castaway, as there are plenty of members of our community who indulge in weeabooness. It is also homage to 4chan origins of castaway.tf, and as previously mentioned, the old internet.

and then castaway-tan proclaimed the following: "no ecelebs!"
another scrapped artwork back from summer, parody/trace of Alpha 1918 picture.

While I larp as an artist, I am actually not that great at drawing, as such, not to shield myself from possible critique, but on contrary - if anyone witnesses an opportunity for myself to improve my artstyle, feel free to comment on it. I am absolutely terrible at backgrounds, so I apologize if they feel rather empty or incomplete. The 4 depictions featured here are the only ones in existance so far, hopefully more will be in the future. Artstyle varies as I discovered different techniques of drawing throughout the phases of establishing the castaway-tan.

Adorable creature. The solid color one looks striking and cool, and little chibi version is particularly cute.
John Castaway has its own merit for being closer to TF2's art style, but anime mascots are just way more meme-able and interesting to look at. One thing I'd suggest is to simplify her chibi version design to make it easier to reproduce (casta-tan fumo when?)

I adore the chibi one dragging Uncle Dane's corpse along.

I agree with f27, make the chibi one more Fumo-esque and easier to draw. We WILL force this coal gem, patriots.

Thanks for appreciation! :D
If I may ask - how would you suggest simplifying her?
To be honest I feared also that her design might be a bit complicated, but I also didn't want it to be too simple, and hoped that I hit more or less good ground considering she is kind of average pirate lady, and most of her design is basically existing tf2 items, and by extension of that she is rule 63 of Jack Sparrow.
But yeah, it was difficult to came up with a good enough design that wasn't too simplistic and yet not cluttered needlessly, I also kind of used touhou's characters as references as these have memorable and comparatively not so busy designs, so I'd appreciate if you could assist me in that.

Also fun fact, I actually came up with idea to make castaway-tan after I found out isis-tan exists, she obviously isn't overcomplicated and she had good source material for that to be the case, but yeah.

Also, just random sketch that popped into my head yesterday while playing EU
