It's actually been going pretty well, seeding is faster, more people join earlier because the experience is much improved over roaming an empty map being semi-friendly and waiting and waiting for enough players to join. This is becuase MGE is playable with as little as one other player on the server. Players of various preferences and skill ranges have been enjoying it from what I've been seeing from seeding in MGE for a few days, since the option to goof off is always present as evidenced by the SERIOUS MGE clip uploaded to the channel recently. The only change id make before introducing it globally would be to auto-RTV when enough players connect and removing it from the map vote until the server reaches 0 players again, as has already been suggested.

As for crits id prefer them to stay out of MGE, crits are funny in regular tf2, but if im dueling someone id feel cheated if i shoot a crit rocket and get the kill for free without raping them. it could be put up to a vote or opinion poll if theres enough people who want them enabled.

How about crits only on melees? Melee weapons that have them are designed around them.

If time allows I'm going to try and, in the next few days, update the plugins so that an RTV is automatically called once a certain threshold of players is reached, then I can put mge on all servers.

My idea is that, let's say the threshold is 10 players, if an 11th player joins a 60 second countdown starts, if there are still >10 players after the countdown, an RTV vote is called (this is mostly to give the person connecting a chance to participate in the vote rather than getting the map switched on them while they're connecting). Additionally, at any point where player count is >10, MGE can't be nominated.

Does this sound reasonable enough of a solution?

Sounds good, and we can still RTV if the server is in the mood for normal TF2 at 8 or 9 players.

MGE needs to be disabled until this plugin is complete, tonight was really embarrassing for castaway, a session failed to take off with MGE (likely because it was started early) and rather than move to VA1, continuous pings were made in VA2. I got home from work and both VA1 and VA2 were dead, and people were STILL trying to start a session in MGE. It shows that people are interested in MGE, sure, but to the point it killed castaway as a whole during prime NA hours.

I never hated the idea of MGE but I’m not unlike alot of other players in NA, I only have so many hours in a night, I was really hoping to play for an hour or 2 because that’s about the time I have in the evenings. Hell that’s what our server is built upon, the foundations of quickplay, not MGE. Feels like an ironic repeat of TF2’s competitive history in a way, but I’m hoping this will never be a regular issue, especially with this plugin your working on, but for fucks sake just disable MGE until then, or temporarily disallow people from nominating it if you absolutely need it in VA2 in order to test your new plugin. They had their fun with it but it’s over for this shit for the time being.

I added a handler plugin which I think should solve the issue. I won't be adding mge to all servers until I'm sure this works.

Brass tacks are:

  • Player threshold is defined as 10 players. When you get above it (11 players) is when the threshold is considered passed

  • When the threshold is passed, a 60 second countdown starts. At the end of the countdown, the threshold is checked again.

  • If the threshold is still passed after this 60 second countdown, the map will initiate the change phase

  • If a map vote has already occurred, and the upcoming map is not another MGE map, then the map switches immediately

  • If a map vote has not occurred, or it has but the vote was for another MGE map, then a map vote is called. Any MGE nominations will be removed from the vote

  • MGE map(s) cannot appear in the nomination list randomly, they must be nominated beforehand

This is all untested but the plugin compiles at least. I don't have time to test it right now though if anyone tries MGE on VA2 you should see this in effect. Additionally, while unrelated to the plugin, the map should end when it hits the time limit now (ideally at least)

I've added a custom mge map created by @Kvasorob (how do you tag people in this software?) named mge_castaway_v1 to specifically Virginia 2. If there are no issues and it runs smoothly it will be added to other relevant servers.

SG is not getting it for now because some SG regulars have told me they don't want do seed with it, which is fine.

I don't know what kind of Asian regulars you've considered, but historically in the past 6 to 7 years in TF2 Asia, MGE has and is always been a popular gamemode that regularly gets filled up every night. Asian players that browse the community server browser tend to be players who used to or are playing competitive TF2, especially with the extremely small population that the region has. That stereotypical image of Asian players being hyper-competitive is unironically real, because this does reflect our reality. But you do you.

The 'only two map extends in a row' limit is kinda stupid, just wastes everyone's time during the longer EU seeding phases. Had to rtv back to mge twice while seeding today.
I'd rather have the auto mapchange player limit be lowered to something like 8 or even lower instead.

So a limit of 8, but no time limit on mge maps? That's doable if it makes sense

Yeah, 8 players (9th being the trigger for the map switch) is enough to have a skirmish on smaller koth maps. At that point the map still being mge is more of a detriment to attracting more people, imo. And if the server is still below that, what good does a forced map change do?

Trying this suggestion out - the threshold is now 8 players instead of 10 and the map has no timelimit on it (though the plugin should still force you off as soon as you get >8 players). We'll see how this goes
