Map Rotation Megathread

#1 Post by random »

This thread will be used for discussing the map rotation. This includes both the base rotation and the weekend rotation.
  • Current Rotation: This is the rotation being used on the server at any given moment, and is updated dynamically.
  • Base Rotation: This is the base rotation which is used during the week
  • Weekend Rotation: This is the custom rotation which is used during the weekend
This thread is mainly for suggestions to the rotation but I will also be using it for posting updates.
Oh, they never lie. They dissemble, evade, prevaricate, confound, confuse, distract, obscure, subtly misrepresent and willfully misunderstand with what often appears to be a positively gleeful relish and are generally perfectly capable of contriving to give one an utterly unambiguous impression of their future course of action while in fact intending to do exactly the opposite, but they never lie. Perish the thought.

I have had some backlog to go through and have added the following custom maps to the weekend rotation:
  • Pride Rock (5cp)
  • Red Bounty (Attack/Defend)
  • Silvertrail (Attack/Defend)
  • Wildcat (Attack/Defend)
  • Mach4 (Capture the Flag)
  • Oldwood (Capture the Flag)
  • System (Capture the Flag)
  • Airfield (King of the Hill)
  • Basalt (King of the Hill)
  • Hills (King of the Hill)
  • Munitions (Payload)
  • Panic (Payload Race)
  • Radiant (Robot Destruction)
In addition, the following vanilla maps have been added to the weekend rotation mostly because I wanted to try them out:
  • Matterhorn (Capture the Flag)
  • Pelican Peak (Capture the Flag)
  • Abbey (2koth)
Lastly, reverse badwater has been removed, and I made a patch for cp_obscure to get it working on Linux, and it is finally on the base week rotation.

I want to do a vote regarding moving some maps from the base -> custom rotation as well as general map removal but that will be done in probably a week or two, I'm not sure if I want to include any of the new maps in the vote or not but if so there should be enough time to try them out.

Remove Pelican Peak, it's legit a bottom 10 maps ever.
Also no cp_ferrum? I sent this one a while ago really hoping it'd get added, sad

Post the link to ferrum again. I was combing the thread yesterday and probably missed it.

Pelican peak was okay the last time I tried it and I wanted to give it a shot. More so to get more CTF on our rotation

Add cp_orange or a variation to weekend rotation. Classic tf2 custom map that has been lost to time. The only time I can play orange is on DOD:S :(

One of the maps I added, Mach4, has a theme which I don't know how to describe other than that it's like TF Classic, or maybe old Halo custom maps. This is a pretty nostalgic theme and I want to find more maps like it

I really like ctf_barn but what is the problem people have with it? If it was the respawn timer is that a simple fix like on deadwood?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I find the spawnroom for ants to be really jarring.

Sneed is just too small of a map I think, I'm also fairly sure you can spawn camp inside of the spawn itself because there's open windows. Would be rtv'd almost instantly on a full server. I do wish this map was bigger, could be a project someone here could take up

Also, does anyone at all find abbey/matterhorn/pelican peak interesting? I thought at least pelican peak would be alright but seems to just be negative response so far. If no one actually likes them I'll remove them early

Not to beat a dead horse, but I at least enjoyed matterhorn as a clusterfuck death match map, but it doesn’t belong on castaway.

I disagree with cp_orange, it's a meme map, and unlike barn or vikings, it doesn't even suit TF2 for a meme map. It's all just a flat surface with a tower in the middle

DeLab you’re a fake TF2 player bro, Orange isn’t a meme map, it’s an icon, a pillar of TF2 community servers. Also you’re thinking of a single variation of Orange, there’s hundreds of variations with different layouts and finished textures

If someone were to go into watchtower and fix it, so certain projectiles can actually be shot in the tower, is it possible that version replaces the vanilla one in the server map rotation? It's not the most pressing issue in the world but I feel it would be nice quality of life.

Perhaps consider adding this version of asteroid to weekend rotation, in the same way as older version of cactus canyon is on it?
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 3618318473

It might be lacking in gameplay and hinder player's existing muscle memory but I'd like to give it a shot just to see how it was originally intended to play and so the people could appreciate modern asteroid more, and we could decide 10 years later if adjustments they made are reasonable or not

Rotation might not have been on the custom one, they should all be in rotation if it swaps to custom. Were you able to see other custom maps?

Oh, they never lie. They dissemble, evade, prevaricate, confound, confuse, distract, obscure, subtly misrepresent and willfully misunderstand with what often appears to be a positively gleeful relish and are generally perfectly capable of contriving to give one an utterly unambiguous impression of their future course of action while in fact intending to do exactly the opposite, but they never lie. Perish the thought.

Figured out the problem, new custom maps are in rotation now. Silly mistake on my end, the maps weren't actually being downloaded to the server.

First impressions on the maps I tried:

  • Radiant: B, very solid RD map, would be an A if the forcefields at the exits didn't halve my frames
  • Panic: B, good PLR map
  • Priderock: C, just doesn't play very well
  • Mach4: D, I wish I could like it, but the layout is pretty bad
  • Airfield: B, not much to say, it's just decent
  • Silvertrail: B, interesting and fun map despite flaws

Re: Map Rotation Megathread

First impressions of all the new maps

  • Pride Rock: D, below average 5cp map. Second is right next to mid, but last is far from second. Jump pads are used to make up for deficits in level design. I love the aesthetics but it doesn't play well

  • Red Bounty: B, I think second point is a little unbalanced but beyond that it's pretty fun

  • Silvertrail: B, I would need more time to really see, we had mostly unbalanced matches so hard to tell. I like the concept and when it was balanced it seemed fun enough

  • Wildcat: C, I wasn't really a fan. Didn't manage to have any fun rounds, which could be bias but it wasn't particularly fun to defend or attack

  • Mach4: C, Small, I like the aesthetic but it's pretty cramped. It might be fun with less players but on a full server its probably too chaotic

  • Oldwood: A, great CTF map, hopefully this can make it onto the main rotation. I was actually worried this one wasn't going to play well but I'm glad to have been proven wrong

  • System: C, while it's fun to spin on the cart as heavy there's not a lot else this has going for it. If I had to guess, the optimal way to play this map is to spam sentries on mid, which no one did when we played but it could be done.

  • Airfield: C, very decent koth map, not much stands out. I don't have anything negative or positive to say about it

  • Basalt: B, it's pretty fun fighting for control over the area above the point

  • Hills: B, a nice koth map. Very scout friendly

  • Munitions: C, but we didn't play much of it so I didn't get to form that much of an opinion. earlier stages seem good, last stage is reeeally open and not in a good way

  • Panic: A, this was a load of fun. Well designed and I think as people learned the map, especially last stage, it'd get more fans. I was worried it was one stage but second stage especially is great, and last stage is a pretty novel idea

  • Radiant: A, my favorite of the bunch. This is just a more casual, spread out take on robot destruction. I don't think every RD map needs to be asteroid and trying to design them all to be asteroid would be a mistake. This is just a lot of fun to run around it, and after you understand the layout (give it a try! it's not that complicated as it turns out) it's a pretty linear map with some flank routes. It's novel and quite enjoyable. Where asteroid lends itself more to tense action packed rounds (due to forcing players to confront each other constantly), this is more laid back. It has a different place than asteroid and they serve two different goals. To me this is proof that custom rd maps can be good and hopefully we'll get more in the future.

Personally I would advocate for the removal of pride rock, adding oldwood, panic, and radiant to main rotation, and everything else staying on weekend (mostly because I would need more time to form opinions but most are just solidly weekend maps)

As a side note someone mentioned there's more rd maps on tf2mapster or something, if anyone has links I'd be interested. I wasn't aware any were made other than radiant or some of the test maps on the workshop

I second this, underrated classic community server map, carried a 32/32 perma stalemate server I use to play on

Haven't played much of the new maps yet but I can already tell cp_silvertrail shouldn't stay, almost everyone RTV'd after 2 rounds because of how bad the layout is, way too flawed.
I suggest replacing it with cp_method, another gravelpit style attack defend map with the same artpass but probably plays much better

thots on the new maps so far
-silverline is absolute bootycheeks
-panic is bootycheeks
-radient is mid, its way too big, might work better on a 32 man or even 40 man server
-system is good but keep it on weekend rotation
-airfield is great
-hills is god tier
-haywire is old news but i got to try it for the first time yesterday and its also god tier

opinions on the other maps coming as soon as i play them... :ugeek:

also add method and ctf quarry v2

I've yet to play on half of the new maps, saturday didn't have them, my overall thoughts so far:

Silvertrail is really bad, not even the fun kind of bad, was obviously meant to be an experiment from the creator
Mach gets really boring after like 5 minutes, we already have vikings, barn and convoy for meme ctf map, we didn't need a fourth one imo
Panic is probably the best custom PLR map we've tried but it's still not very good, it's a C tier at best and I'd keep it for weekends if not outright remove
Redbounty is one I suggested, it's pretty mid, I was hoping cp_ferrum would get added and for redbounty to be considered, not the opposite
Airfield is great, no complain there

Replace silvertrail with method, mach with quarry (taking Carl's words for it) and redbounty with ferrum
