I Want YOU to Make Castaway Clips

Out of the last 40 videos posted to the official Castaway TF2 Servers YouTube channel, 29 of them (72.5%) were made by me. That's retarded, and I want it to stop. The channel is one of many reasons why Castaway is so special, and it doesn't deserve to be as neglected as it is.
Here are 5 reasons why you should start contributing to the channel:

  • 1. It's an excellent way to promote the community
These days, Castaway doesn't have many methods of advertising itself. Of the ones it has, the YouTube channel has the potential to be the most effective. TF2 players love watching funny gameplay clips, and I'm sure most people here have experienced plenty of those, so why not share them? Even if only one person tries out Castaway from a video you post, that's still one more person playing on the servers. Plus, every video posted has a chance of becoming really popular and leading to a wave of new people entering the community, which is exactly what we need right now.

  • 2. It lets people see funny moments they otherwise wouldn't have seen
Not everyone can play every session from start to finish, myself included. Additionally, even if they could, there are plenty of good, clip-worthy moments that are only witnessed by a small fraction of players on the server. Sharing them doesn't just expose new players to Castaway; it lets regulars see funny things they otherwise would've missed.

  • 3. It's not hard
If you just want to post simple, individual clips, you barely need any setup. Steam has a built-in game recording feature, which is perfect for basic clip-making. Even a video editor is optional in most cases.

  • 4. SourceTV lets you make clips even if you weren't recording your gameplay live
Every single Castaway game is recorded by SourceTV and uploaded to a public Mega folder. While using SourceTV isn't exactly simple, it can definitely come in handy. A guide on how to use SourceTV demos when clipping can be found here.

  • 5. The sky is the limit
You aren't limited to posting single clips as videos. If you feel inclined to make such a video, basically anything that promotes Castaway is on the table. Frag movies, clip dumps, GMod shorts, and the like are all welcome.

Now you have no excuse for not contributing to the Castaway channel (other than "My computer is dogshit and I get 20 FPS even with a potato config, my recordings would be unwatchable"). Check out the YouTube Clip Submission Thread for more information (including guidelines for submissions), and get clipping!

I record demo's of all my matches, but it's a pain in the ass to set down and scrub through a dozen 45 minute demo's trying to find cool things I did. Got any tips that might streamline the process?

There isn't really a process. Here's what I wrote about it in my SourceTV demo guide:

When searching for the part you want to clip, there are two methods:

  • If you remember what the map timer was at when the moment want to clip happened, you can skip right to it with the Goto feature. For example, if the map time left was 18:00 when what you want to clip happened, you can skip to tick 102,960 (26 [minutes into the demo] * 60 [seconds per minute] * 66 [ticks per second]; skip to a minute before so there's time to set up your camera + avoid certain issues). From there, you can start recording.

  • If you don't remember, your best bet is probably to just go to your POV and watch the demo sped-up until you get to the part you want to clip. Once you get to the part, rewind a decent amount (I'd say about 1400 ticks, maybe more if you need to), and start recording.

I would like to make more clips, I've only made a few. Trouble is I tend to be busy and what I want to make takes time, I have it in my mind to make both Pomson and Caber frag movies, but I'll need to set up some sort of demo parsing so I can search through past demos to find ones I can draw from.

As a reminder to anyone who doesn't know, all matches are recorded in demos which you can find here, so no moment will be lost to time if you want to go back and make a video about it

ye ye ill lock back in on this shit

protip: If something clipworthy happens jot down the details on when it happened in console and copy it to notepad and u can find it in the demo later easily.
e.g: 5-6 VA1, pipeline 22 mins left on map epic moonshot

try kdenlive for basic video editing, free & you don't need to make an account. it's really not that hard to throw something together once you understand how the timeline works, but fancier effects like green-screen, image & text overlays are somewhat advanced for a noob. I'm also busy with producing a (unrelated) video with a friend, after that I don't have much going on so I might try something for castaway

I only remember using premier in highschool like 7 years ago & it was fine, so yes probably use premier instead of kdenlive since you already have it cracked. Gabber or Hompo might have a more informed opinion

I have minimal knowledge since my editing itself is minimal but yeah sure premiere works. It has the advantage that anything you need to learn is found online easily more or less. It has the disadvantage on being dependent on windows, so if you're switching to linux later on you'll have to find some other software and re-learn how everything works there.

I have a backlog of 3 unfinished fully edited videos on davinci resolve (older version that isn’t shitty) but between full time employment these past 2 months due to the weather getting nicer people are wanting plumbing issues fixed like crazy, getting my house built up for my unborn child and part time school I’m fucked 100 hours out of the week, I legit might send these videos and clips to a friend or a willing volunteer for editing.
