nohats and all the stuff it comes with (no unusuals, skins). someday i'll stop being lazy and use genuline's guide to make a custom nohats build with everything i want. there's some good hats and bad hats from mostly every update. the other is my frankenstein's monster combination of community hud fixes for the quake crosshair (flashes red when you hit someone), this centered metal hud and this 2007 hud for the cleaner menu. took too long to get these 3 all working together

Main ones for me are Definitive 2013 HUD and 2013 Weapons, Viewmodels & Animations so I can pretend I didn't join TF2 in 2019

Oh boy, I can flex the sheer number of mods I have installed for fun

First off as a general tip to anyone who has a lot of mods installed, the number of folders/vpk files you have in your tf/custom folder is directly proportional to the time it takes for your game to open and to load into servers. The more mods, the slower it is. You can bypass this by extracting all your vpks into folders, then combining all your folders and repackaging it into a single vpk.

Additionally, if you do not play on casual, then you don't need to install a preloader. Preloaders exist to bypass sv_pure settings, but on most community servers where using mods is allowed, a preloader is pointless and just makes your game take longer to start up. You can use either regular or "casual compatible" mods, both work and neither require a preloader if you only play community servers.

That being said, here are my favorite general purpose mods:
  • Customized no-hats-bgum (Download): This is my version of the no hats mod. I made it by individually going through every hat in the game and blacklisting anything I didn't want to see. Provided in the zip is the actual end result mod, as well as the config.txt you can use with nhcustom2 (the tool to allow you to customize the no hats mod)
  • Other no hat mod addons (Website): I use no_unusuals, no_christmas_lights, and no_botkillers. I would use no_skins but it causes problems and makes weapons look buggy sometimes.
  • Altered Projectile Trails (Link): Makes the trails of projectiles more flashy, notably this makes the pomson and bison look amazing. In the download there's an alt version of the mod that adds gay flags on some of the projectiles but you can just ignore that and use the base version
  • Beta Muzzle Flash (Link): Self explanatory
  • Better Kill Icons (Link): Adds kill icons for a bunch of weapons which didn't have any and makes other icons look better
  • Toon Particles (Link): Changes some of the particles to be more cartoony
  • Ed, Edd n Eddy Class Portraits (Link): It's funny, I like it
  • Less Distracting Explosions (Link): Makes it easier to see when there's explosions happening all over the place by making the explosion particle smaller
  • GLaDOS Announcer (Link): Replaces the sound of the announcer with GLaDOS
  • Troll Face Autobalance (Link): Self explanatory
I also have reskin mods for almost every single weapon in the game, which I did just for fun and to spice things up. Instead of listing all of them, here's just my favorite ones:
  • The Conventional (Link): Reskin for the pistol that turns it into a silenced pistol
  • Odd Job (Link): Reskin for the guillotine that turns it into Oddjob's hat from James Bond
  • Slurm Bundle Pack (Link): Reskins all the Bonk items to use the Slurm soda from Futurama
  • Halefire Sauce (Link): Reskin for the Mad Milk that turns it into hot sauce
  • Death Ray (Link): Reskin for the C.A.P.P.E.R which makes it look more like a TF2 weapon
  • Old Jumper Weapons (Link): Reverts the sticky and rocket jumper models to use the old ones that look less like nerf guns
  • Portable Death Ray (Link): Reskin for the Cow Mangler which makes it look more like a TF2 weapon
  • Neo Polar Star (Link): Reskin for the Bison which makes it look more like a TF2 weapon
  • Mug Root Beer Concheror (Link): Self explanatory
  • Backburner Recolor (Link): Recolors the tank of the Backburner so it's easier to tell that it's not stock from a distance
  • Combustion Cannon (Link): Reskin for the Dragon's Fury which makes it look more like a TF2 weapon
  • Social Harmonizer (Link): Reskin for the Manmelter, a little more half-life-esque but fits better than the default one
  • Bottle Rocket (Link): Reskin for the Caber that turns it into an exploding Champagne bottle
  • The Fifty (Link): Reskin for the Iron Curtain that turns it into the minigun from Halo
  • Drive By (Link): Reskin for the Huo Long Header that makes it look like a modded motorcycle
  • Gothic Gauntlets (Link): Reskin for the Fists of Steel that makes them less gaudy and more like steel-reinforced gloves
  • Anchor Arms (Link): Reskin for the Warriors Spirit that makes them not stand out as much and look generally better
  • Tesla Coil (Link): Reskin for the Pomson that makes it look a little more like a TF2 weapon
  • Signal Booster (Link): Reskin which can be used for any wrangler variant, I have it replacing the Giger Counter
  • Handgun (Link): Reskin for the short circuit which turns it into a literal fingergun. One of my favorites
  • Ethereal Extremity (Link): Reskin for the Gunslinger which makes it into a holographic hand
  • Mechanic's Mjolnir (Link): Reskin for the Eureka Effect that turns it into Mjolnir
  • Artillery Sentry (Link): Gives sentry guns a new look
  • Pre-Fortress 2 Teleporter (Link): Gives teleporters a new look
  • DOOM III Teleporter (Link): Alternate particles/sounds for the teleporter
  • LEGO Medigun (Link): Reskin for the Medigun and Kritzkrieg that makes them look like they are made out of Lego pieces
  • Betterer Kritzkrieg (Link): Reskin for the Kritzkrieg which makes it look more visually distinct from the Medigun. The hose partially conflicts with LEGO mod
  • Critical Transmission (Link): Reskin for the Quick Fix, also comes with altered healing beam particles
  • Big Sister's Sting (Link): Reskin for the Ubersaw that turns it into an arm mounted syringe. The viewmodels for this don't work very well for me for some reason
  • Der Erwecker (Link): Reskin for the Vita Saw that turns it into a spooky syringe
  • Kaiserfaust (Link): Reskin for the Machina which makes it look more like a TF2 weapon
  • Huntsman Requiem (Link): Reskin for the huntsman variants that makes it look fancier. I have this apply only to the Festive huntsman
  • Throwable Bacon Grease (Link): Reskins for the Jarate that turns it into bacon grease
  • Kirzinger (Link): Reskin for the Bushwacka that turns it into a more threatening machete
  • Botany Bay Butcher (Link): Reskin for the Tribalman's Shiv that turns it into an axe
  • Secret Service (Link): Reskin for the YER, makes it look cooler
  • Ice Knife (Link): Reskin for the Spy-cicle that makes it more like a knife
  • Le Fantome (Link): Reskin for the Dead Ringer that makes it look more like a watch. The invis meter is sometimes broken for some reason
  • Bi-Decoder (Link): Reskin for the sapper to give it an alternate look and sound
  • Bluffer Fish (Link): Reskin for the Red Tape Recorder that turns it into Big Mouth Billy Bass
  • Defective Ap-Sap (Link): Reskin for the Ap-Sap that makes it a Portal turret
  • Le Smoke (Link): Reskin for the Disguise Kit that adds a dapper gentleman
I have more than this but most of them are just ones I'm trying out and might not keep.

If you're interested why I have so many, I have played the game for over 8000 hours and having some novelty is nice. I also don't believe in being someone who is a elitist about having a "pure" game, the game is moddable and people should have the freedom to mod it with whatever dumb shit they see fit if it makes the game more fun for them. I use a custom hud, have custom hitsounds, lots of custom models, and I enjoy myself.
Oh, they never lie. They dissemble, evade, prevaricate, confound, confuse, distract, obscure, subtly misrepresent and willfully misunderstand with what often appears to be a positively gleeful relish and are generally perfectly capable of contriving to give one an utterly unambiguous impression of their future course of action while in fact intending to do exactly the opposite, but they never lie. Perish the thought.

I use a modified version of FlawHud.

Some changes include:
  • Replaced Workshop button with a Server Browser button.
  • Replaced Replays button with a Demos button.
  • Replace custom backgrounds with the stock background to improve how UI elements contrast against them.
  • Fixed many broken UI elements caused by how the Linux client scales fonts differently.
  • Wiped the devs shit smear off the title screen.

If anyone wants to download my modified version for whatever reason, you can do so here. Keep in mind that if you're using Windows, then you'll probably experience some issues with certain UI elements being to small, so I wouldn't recommend it.

I asked this almost a year ago on the steam forum, but may as well ask again here. Is there any mod out there that replaces descriptions of the weapon cards with the reverted descriptions? I basically exclusively play on Castaway and I find it annoying to have to check !reverts or the website to see what the actual stats of my weapons are. As far as I know this isn't accomplishable with a HUD for some reason but I think it can be done by editing the language files (though I haven't been able to figure out how). If anyone knows how this could be done (or if it already has been done), let me know.

Genuline's guide? I tried to make a custom nohats build but I wasn't really happy with it. I only ended up hiding all the post-maintenance Smissmass/Scream Fortress cases (minus a couple hats/miscs I actually like) and compie badges before I realized just how many hats there really are in TF2. Has Genuline gone through the effort of making a list of every art style-breaking hat in the game or something?

There's also the problem of deciding what's truly delete worthy. Something like the COVID mask is an obvious one, but what about something like the Respectless Rubber Glove or the Stainless Pot? There are a lot of items that are total classics that I don't think anybody has a real problem with, but that also don't really fit the art style or original tone of the game.

Genuline made a video on how to make a custom nohats build. You don't really need it if you already know how that program works, I just have it bookmarked for when I want to figure it out.

As for what constitutes deleting a hat, it's simple. If it looks ugly to you, get rid of it. It's your client to customize, so your opinion is the only one that matters. If you're going back and forth on the rubber glove or pot hat then something you could do is compile separate builds of the mod to have those specific hats on or off.

here's my config.txt if you're curious, its not every art style-breaking hat but rather all the cosmetics from before gun mettle with ones I personally dislike removed IE big equip regions. I think its easier to keep all the ones you do like using the date: command (which I didn't go over in the vid woops) instead of writing down each and every one you HATE >:( I tried to attach my config.txt as a file but couldn't figure it out, haven't used a traditional forum since 2018

Thanks mate, this'll be useful. At some point what I think I'm gonna do is go through the list of every cosmetic in the game and set aside which ones fit and which ones don't (i.e., bad promo items, Smissmass/Halloween slop, downright bad and ill-fitting hats, compie badges, etc.) It'll be a lot of work so I'd be happy to share it around if anyone else would be interested in a more carefully curated list.

This is what I did, you can see in my post I have a link to my config.txt. But I went with a blacklist approach rather than a whitelist one, as this leaves in things like medals which I don't mind. I think this is the best way to do it, just go through the list of all hats yourself and edit it to be whatever your taste is. I have a handful of artstyle breaking hats in my config that I keep just because I consider them classics

This is the only mod I have really, castaway texture replacement for the flag taunt: https://gamebanana.com/mods/609321

I see this taunt used rather often actually as for new taunts, always makes me glad to see castaway's symbol on something in the game

What’s Left of Ye, use the Shiny Blood decals version
https://gamebanana.com/mods/12374

I also use a hand poser mod for corpses (zoom in on the demo’s hands) however it’s not up on gamebanana, if anyone’s interested I might pack it and reupload it here

I use other mods, almost all are for flavor and small details, the what’s left of ye is the most noticeable mod I use

If you use What’s left of ye, I recommend setting r_decals between 250 - 548, any higher is too distracting and any lower isn’t really noticeable

PSA: If there's a mod [or anything cool online] that you really like, make sure you have that shit backed up on your own machine. I loved using the Jogger's Jersey for Scout because Scout doesn't have an official baseball jersey [somehow] and now I come to find out that the mod is completely scrubbed from the workshop and mods.tf has apparently been defunct for over a year now. [Guy who owns it says he can just put the archive of all the files out there but doesn't want to for 'ethical reasons.' ???] Been spending the last couple hours trying to figure out how to import a Gmod hex into TF2 and how to make it replace the misc I want, but I'm no modder so I'm just running in circles.

Thought it was worth a shot at least, ha.

I still don't understand how they haven't in however many years added a baseball jersey misc for Scout. They have a soccer jersey, multiple elf costumes, multiple schoolboy costumes, but no baseball jersey.

At this point I'm seriously considering just making one myself from scratch. Not for the workshop or anything gay like that but just for my own enjoyment. It'll probably be good Blender practice, anyway.

Last night I recreated a setup I used a while ago.

Using this super shotgun model, these sounds, and these animations, I got the perfect feeling Super Shotgun with the Force-a-Nature. It's entirely placebo but I have way more fun with it than with vanilla.
